The Camp

”It’s really beautiful. It feels like God visits everywhere else but lives in Africa.”

Will Smith

Mara West Camp borders the remote and wild western edge of Masai Mara National Reserve. Guests enter the park through the Oloololo Gate and safari throughout the Transmara side of the park.  Far from the paved roads traversed by safari vans, this part of the park is remote and less frequented by those traveling by road. Guests often fly in to the nearby airstrip or travel by road in 4×4 vehicles specially outfitted for safaris.

Mara West Camp has eight secluded chalets, perched on the edge of the Oloololo Escarpment, overlooking the vast plains of the Transmara Triangle below, and eight traditional safari tents overlooking the escarpment’s bordering valley.

The secluded chalets are a unique combination of canvas and solid building materials.  The bathroom is made of brick while the bedroom area consists of canvas panels with zippered windows and roll up panels.  The floors are solid hardwood and the tent is entered through a pair of French doors, with glass window panes.  The traditional safari tents are built of canvas with zippered door and windows with roll up panels.  The bathrooms are also made of brick.

In both the secluded chalets and the safari tents, full bathroom facilities are en-suite with flush toilets and large spacious showers, complete with good water pressure and plenty of hot water twice a day, mornings and evenings. Mara West Camp’s electricity is a combination power lines, solar, generator and battery packs, so that power is always available for lights, and for charging equipment and other electrical appliances.

Various activities in the camp include game viewing which is the highlight of a stay at Mara West Camp. Walking tours accompanied by a nature walk guide provide an experience of enjoying Kenya’s flora, birds, and wildlife on foot. Traditional dances are also performed by the Maasai dressed in their full traditional regalia and first-hand accounts of the life of a Maasai are usually told. Mara West Camp also provides massages and other spa treatments.

Meals are served in the Kingfisher Restaurant or on the large verandah outside the Restaurant with a wide view of the savannah surrounding the camp.  With a fully equipped kitchen and professional chefs, Mara West Camp is able to spread the table with simple but appetizing dishes of many varieties. A wide range of tastes, including vegetarian dishes, can be catered to. In spite of its remote location, it is the goal of Mara West Camp to provide guests with a variety of fresh fruits, salads and vegetables, home cooked pastries, bread, and desserts, freshly prepared soups, and creative main entrees.

At Mara West Camp an informal, relaxed atmosphere captures the feel of Africa. The staff caters to our guests with an eagerness to make their time at the camp a special memory. Early morning tea and coffee, hot fires for showering, room service with special attention to the many individual needs, all this and more make the safari experience a unique and rewarding holiday.
